A tribute to mothers!

In Greece and several other countries, the second Sunday of May is a beloved celebration characterized by love, gratitude, and the honoring of maternal bonds. This special day, known as Mother's Day, holds deep cultural significance and was established to honor the women who play one of the most important roles in our lives.

The roots of Mother's Day in Greece can be traced back to antiquity, where the goddess Rhea, honored as the mother of all gods, symbolized the essence of maternal love and care. Festivals and various rituals dedicated to Rhea celebrated the sacred bond between mother and child, laying the foundation for this celebration in Greek culture.

Over the centuries, the observance of motherhood evolved, influenced by religious and cultural changes. In the Christian tradition, Mother's Day was initially celebrated on February 2nd, a date that the Orthodox Church honors the Virgin Mary and the presentation of Jesus at the Temple. This date had deep religious significance, intertwining maternal devotion with faith and spirituality.

In the early 20th century, the modern concept of Mother's Day gained momentum, partly due to the efforts of Anna Jarvis from the United States. Her advocacy for a designated day to honor mothers led to the proclamation of the second Sunday of May as Mother's Day by American President Woodrow Wilson in 1914.

From then until today, this day has been celebrated in various ways. One of the most beloved traditions of Mother's Day in Greece is the giving of flowers, symbolizing beauty, vitality, and the nurturing qualities associated with maternal love. From delicate roses to vibrant daisies, each flower conveys sincere emotions, expressing gratitude for the selfless care and support provided by mothers.Another cherished custom is the preparation of special meals. Families gather in the kitchen to cook traditional dishes and flavorful desserts as an opportunity to pamper their mothers and create lasting memories together.

Whether through grand celebrations or through a simple hug, a flower, or a heartfelt word, this day reminds us how important it is to express our love, gratitude, and respect to the women who brighten our lives with their selfless devotion.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mothers around the world! To all those who truly love, support, encourage, strive, and give of themselves every single day without expecting anything in return, today belongs to you and to the deepest appreciation and warmest wishes you so greatly deserve.

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!!!
